Rothwell, Yorkshire born right back Ben Wheelhouse began his football career with Rothwell Haig Colliery in 1919 and played for Rothwell Athletic in 1920, returning to play for the Colliery in 1921. In June 1922 he signed for Third Division (North) Halifax Town and made his Football League debut at Grimsby Town in September 1923, making 32 appearances before First Division Burnley signed him in March 1924. He made 13 appearances in just over a year at Turf Moor before returning to Yorkshire when he joined non league Denaby United in 1925.
He returned to Football League action when he re-joined Halifax Town in September 1926, and spent six seasons back at The Shay, scoring 4 goals in 176 appearances before a move to Rochdale in August 1932. He spent two seasons at ‘Dale, scoring twice in 68 appearances before he returned to Denaby United in 1934.
