Staveley born left back Ernest Wheatley had a brief football career after the First World War. Joining Second Division Rotherham County, he made his Football League debut for them against Barnsley in February 1921 playing 15 times at left back before the season end. He started the new season as first choice and scored at Bradford Park Avenue in a 4-2 defeat towards the end of September, but lost his first team place a month later after 10 games, playing only 3 more times in 1921-22 before joining Midland League Mansfield Town in the 1922 close season. He also played for Wath Athletic in 1923.
