Description

Wednesfield, Staffordshire born winger Jack Tonks began his football career with Walsall Unity in 1889 and joined Walsall Town Swifts in 1890, from where he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, making his debut in an FA Cup 3rd Round tie at West Bromwich Albion in March 1895, but he didn’t play again that season. He scored on his Football League debut in a 4-3 defeat at Preston North End that September, and became a regular in the first team. He was a key part of Wolves’ FA Cup run that saw them go all the way to the 1896 FA Cup Final, where they lost 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday, Tonks having scored the winner against Derby County in the semi final at Wellington Road, Perry Bar. He lost his place in the Wolves line-up in January 1900 and joined Midland League Walsall in 1901 after 23 goals in 119 appearances for Wolves.
