Walsall, Staffordshire born centre half Harry Haynes began his football career with Walsall Unity in 1891 before joining hometown professional Second Division club Walsall Town Swifts in 1892, making his Football League debut at Small Heath (now Birmingham City) that December. He made 3 appearances for The Swifts before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers in February 1893. Initially a fringe player, making just 2 appearances in their 1893-94 campaign, he became a regular in their 1894-95 line-up, scoring twice in 22 appearances before leaving the club for Small Heath in July 1895.
He had a single season at Muntz Street making 10 appearances, but when they were relegated from the First Division in May 1896 he joined Southern League Southampton St Mary’s, making his debut for The Saints against Chatham that September, soon converting to the left back position. He scored 5 goals in 76 appearances for Southampton through to 1900 and featured in their early Southern League Championship wins before retiring to concentrate on being a landlord.
