Description

Baillieston, Glasgow born centre half Jock Strain started playing football for Baillieston Juniors in 1914 before joining Shettleston in 1919. From there he joined Scottish League club Bo’Ness in 1921. Spotted by manager Harry Kent as a Bo’ness trialist in a Scottish League Second Division match, he was signed by Watford for “a small fee” in November 1921 to stiffen the defence, which he undoubtedly succeeding in doing, at centre‐half and later left‐half, making his Football League debut against Queen’s Park Rangers the following month.

During his six season stint at Vicarage Road he scored 6 goals in 193 appearances before returning to Scotland in August 1927 to join Hamilton Academical, returning to Baillieston Juniors in December 1929 before retiring in the summer of 1930.
