Dundee born winger David Steven began his football career with hometown junior club Dundee Violet in 1894 before joining Scottish League Dundee in 1895. In August 1896 he moved to England to join First Division Bury, making his Football League debut at Derby County the next month but playing only twice more for their first team over the following weeks. He joined Southern League Southampton in the 1897 close season. He scored 6 goals in 19 appearances for The Saints over a two season stay at The Dell, winning The Southern League Championship both seasons, before returning to Scotland to re-join Dundee in 1899. He joined Montrose in 1902 and was at the club when he tragically died of a heart attack in April 1903 aged only 25.
