Description

Higham, Lancashire born full back Tom Smith started playing football for local junior club Higham United in 1928 and joined Nelson as an amateur in March 1930 without playing for their first eleven. He joined Norden in 1932 before signing for Rochdale in October 1933 for whom he made his debut in an FA Cup tie at Sutton Town in November 1933, having a single season at Spotland where he made 26 appearances. He joined Luton Town in July 1934 and soon established himself in their first team, being ever present as they won the Third Division (South) Championship in 1936-37 and scoring once at Fulham in April 1938, his only career goal, in 172 appearances for The Hatters. In June 1939 he joined Second Division Burnley but didn’t play for the club before football was suspended due to the outbreak of World War Two, which effectively ended his career.
