Drymen, Stirlingshire born winger James Smith started his senior football career with Scottish League Kilmarnock in 1893 before heading south to join Second Division Burslem Port Vale in 1894, making his Football League debut against Newcastle United the same October. He scored 4 times in 21 appearances for The Valiants before joining First Division Preston North End in the 1895 close season, where he struggled to get into their first eleven, making only 5 appearances for the Deepdale club.
