Description

Darfield, Yorkshire born outside left Fred Tunstall started playing football locally with Darfield St George’s in 1914 before the advent of The First World War. He began his professional career at Midland League club Scunthorpe & Lindsey United immediately after the War and transferred to First Division Sheffield United in December 1920 for £1,000, making his debut a couple of days later at Tottenham Hotspur and becoming a Blades “great” over the next eleven years.

He made 472 appearances for The Blades scoring 134 goals across twelve seasons, managing to score 20 goals in their 1925-26 and 1927-28 campaigns, and he won the FA Cup with them in 1925, scoring the winning goal against Cardiff City on the half hour in the Final in front of 92,000 spectators at Wembley. Between 1921 and 1931 such was his consistency. he missed less than 20 League matches.

He also won 7 England caps between 1923 and 1925, making his international debut against Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1923, winning his last cap two years later at the same venue. He captained an FA Tour of Canada in 1926, and also played four times for The Football League.

In February 1933 he joined Halifax Town and scored another 43 goals in 116 appearances for The Shaymen over the next four years. Having never scored a hat-trick for The Blades, he scored all 4 goals in a 4-2 win over Stockport County in September 1933 as he finished the club’s second top goalscorer in 1933-34 with 22 goals, and a further treble in a 4-2 win at Rochdale in September 1934, playing his final match for Halifax Town in May 1936. From July 1936 he played for, and in three separate spells up to 1965 he was the manager of Boston United, as well as serving the club in various other capacities such as trainer and coach.
