Waterfoot, Lancashire born full back Fred Smith started his football career with Rossendale United in 1920, joining Second Division Bury in 1921 and making his Football League debut against Coventry City that October. He equalled his 28 appearances of the 1921-22 season in 1923-24 (when Bury were promoted to the First Division as Second Division runners up) but was only an occasional player after 1924, making double figures by way of appearances only once in 7 seasons. He played his last match of 117 for Bury in October 1931, scoring 4 times, before joining Ashton National in 1932.
