Skegby, Nottinghamshire born full back Sam Slack started his football career with Sutton Town in 1925, joining Frickley Colliery in 1926 and playing for Shirebrook in 1927 before joining Third Division (South) Charlton Athletic. He made his Football League debut against Fulham in April 1929 in a 0-0 draw at The Valley, and made 2 further appearances in a defeat at Bristol Rovers and a home win over Brentford over the course of the next 5 days. However at the end of the season he was released and joined Midland League Mansfield Town in the close season. After a season at Field Mill, he rejoined Sutton Town in 1930 and later played for Edwinstowe Welfare in 1931.
