Description
Shettleston, Glasgow born centre half Hugh Simpson began his football career in junior football with Shettleston in 1902 before joining Scottish League Bo’Ness in 1903 before joining Second Division Glossop in January 1905, making his Football League debut in a 1-1 draw at Bradford City the next month as an inside forward. He scored twice in 10 appearances for The Hillmen before returning to Scotland to join Raith Rovers, where he converted to centre half and became a very effective member of one of their greatest ever teams.
Described at the time as ” a ‘spoiler’ of combination and a defender who wants a lot of beating”, he helped Raith win the Scottish League Championship for the first time in their history in 1907-08 and he stayed with Raith until 1912 when he joined Leith Athletic. He had a loan spell at Abercorn later the same year before joining Cowdenbeath in 1913, where he subsequently ended his playing career.
