Description

Parkhead, Glasgow born goalkeeper James Raeside played for Wellington Stars in 1896 and joined Parkhead Juniors in 1898 before signing for Scottish League Third Lanark in August 1899, spending 7 seasons at Caithkin Park, making 143 Scottish League appearances, winning the Scottish League Championship with The Warriors in 1904 and The Scottish Cup in 1905. He was awarded a full cap for Scotland while at Thirds when he played in a 2-0 defeat to Wales at Tynecastle in March 1906.

In May 1906 he signed for First Division Bury making his Football League debut against Sheffield Wednesday at the start of September. He was Bury’s undisputed principal glovesman until September 1910 when he lost his place to Jim Holt, and although he regained his place later the same season, he played only once more for Bury, his final game of 165 coming at Blackburn Rovers in September 1911. He is one of the rare breed of goalkeepers to have scored, converting 3 penalties in the 1909-10 season for The Shakers, the first against Preston in October in a 3-1 victory, and the second and third both coming in a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United in April 1910.
