Choppington, Northumberland born outside right Jack Prior began his football career with Choppington Colliery in 1921 and played for Blyth Spartans in 1922 for whom he made his senior debut in an FA Cup tie in January 1923 in a 3-0 defeat at home to First Division Stoke, before joining First Division Sunderland later the same season, making his Football League debut for Sunderland in a 2-0 home win over Manchester City at the end of March. Although generally on the fringes of the first team during his time at Roker Park, he spent most of 1925-26 in the first team, scoring 9 goals in 32 appearances that season as The Wearsiders finished 3rd in the League Championship. But he lost his place in September 1926 and was bought by Grimsby Town in February 1927 after 11 goals in 71 appearances.

At Blundell Park he was part of their team that gained promotion to the First Division in 1928-29 as Second Division runners up, and he stayed a regular member of the first eleven until their relegation in 1932, having scored 36 goals in 168 appearances. He returned to the north east and joined non league Ashington that summer, but in October returned to the Football League with Mansfield Town, scoring 7 goals in 32 appearances for The Stags during the remainder of the season before joining non league Stalybridge Celtic in the 1933 close season. He later played for Pressed Steel of Oxford from 1934.

NB in the image he is shown with Grimsby team mates Jock Priestley, Charlie Wilson and Tommy Read.
