Hindley, Lancashire born right back Freddie Kay began his football career playing for Ramsbottom British Legion after the First World War before joining newly elected Third Division (North) club Accrington Stanley, making his Football League debut against Rochdale in September 1921. He was a regular performer during 1921-22 as Stanley finished a creditable fifth in the League, however he was injured in March 1922 and played only once more, in a 0-0 draw with Crewe Alexandra in January 1923 before retiring from the game after 31 appearances for Accrington Stanley.
