The Portsmouth team photographed in 1929-30.
This was the start of an era where Portsmouth would spend an unbroken 30 years in the First Division having been promoted in 1927. The core of the successful 1930’s team, names such as Jock Gilfillan, Alex Mackie, Billy Smith, Jimmy Nichol, Jack Smith, Jack Weddle, David Thackeray, Jimmy Easson and Sep Rutherford, are all in the team photograph and manager Jack Tinn, having being appointed in the summer of 1927, would remain the club’s manager until the summer of 1947 for what would premise the club’s most successful period, winning the FA Cup in 1939 (after a losing final in 1934) and back to back post war League Championships in 1949 and 1950.
