Kew, Surrey born outside left George Pither began his football career with Richmond Wednesday in 1919 and played for Isleworth Town in 1920 before joining Division Three (South) Brentford in 1921, making his Football League debut against Southend United that September. He made 7 appearances for Brentford before joining Millwall in May 1922, making 19 appearances for The Lions over the next two seasons. In June 1924 he joined Bristol Rovers but was very much a fringe player at Eastville, making only 2 appearances before joining non league Torquay United in 1925.
In May 1926 he returned to Football League action with Merthyr Town, scoring 5 times in 16 appearances before being signed by First Division Liverpool for £500 that November. He played a dozen matches exclusively as replacement left winger for the established Fred Hopkin in the 1926-27 season and 1927-28 seasons. Pither’s only goal for the club came on 1st October 1927 when Portsmouth were crushed 8-2 at Anfield with the other scorers being Willie Devlin with four and Gordon Hodgson who scored a hat-trick.
In May 1928, after 18 months at Anfield, Pither returned to the third tier of League football with Crewe Alexandra, scoring 12 goals in 39 appearances before returning to Merseyside joining New Brighton in August 1929. He spent two seasons at the Tower Athletic Ground and was an ever present in his second season with The Rakers, scoring 11 goals in 81 appearances before joining non league Tunbridge Wells Rangers in the summer of 1931. He later played for Chatham and Margate in 1932 before his retirement.
