South Shields, Tyneside born John “Jack” Peart was a well travelled centre forward who played for many clubs with some success. Starting in junior football at South Shields Adelaide in 1905, he played for Treharris in 1906 before joining First Division Sheffield United in May 1907, for whom he made his Football League debut at Manchester City in March 1908. Unable to get many opportunities. he moved to Stoke City in 1911 after 8 goals in 28 games for The Blades. He scored 38 goals in 44 games for The Potters before moving to Newcastle United in March 1912. He managed 6 goals in only 17 games on Tyneside before moving to Notts County in February the following year. For the Magpies he scored 52 goals in only 84 games both sides the First World War including 29 goals in 1913-14, when he was selected to represent The Football League, playing in a 3-2 defeat to The Scottish League at Turf Moor in March 1914.

After the War he returned to Notts County, but was transferred to Birmingham in November 1919. After 3 games for Birmingham he joined Derby County in January 1920 for whom he played 9 times, scoring once, and after a spell at non league Ebbw Vale he joined Port Vale in January 1922 playing 7 games for them in the Second Division during the rest of the season.

He then joined Norwich City in July 1922. At Norwich he scored 8 goals in 24 games before moving to Rochdale in March 1923 where he played another year scoring 10 goals in 22 games for ‘Dale as their player-manager. He had a successful and lengthy career as a manager, managing Rochdale for over 7 years until he joined Bradford City in the summer of 1930. He enjoyed 5 seasons at Valley Parade although was shown the door in March 1935 as they finished 20th in Division Two. He then joined Fulham in May 1935 and was their manager until his death in September 1948.
