Burnley born Jerry Jackson holds a somewhat unusual claim to footballing fame. Originally on the books of his hometown club, Burnley, in 1900-01, he never appeared for their first team and went into coaching. As trainer of Second Division Sheffield Wednesday after the First World War, due to a player injury crisis he was pressed into action on 27th August 1923, by now already 46 years old and in so doing becoming by some six years the oldest ever player to play for The Owls. He lasted 35 minutes playing on the wing in a 2-0 defeat at Port Vale. He later trained Reading and was their trainer when they won the Third Division (South) Championship in 1925-26.
