Description

Kettlebrook, Tamworth born goalkeeper Hubert Pearson spent his entire professional career, spanning 18 years, with West Bromwich Albion having joined them from Tamworth Athletic in 1907. He made his debut at Birmingham in an FA Cup tie in January 1908 and by 1910 had become their undisputed glovesman, and played for Albion both sides of the First World War losing his place to George Ashmore in 1923 and playing the last of his 371 appearances in March 1925 (he scored two penalties for The Baggies). It would be only 2 more years before his son Harold became the Albion goalkeeper holding the gloves until the mid 1930’s.

Hubert was in Albion’s 1912 losing FA Cup Final team, defeated by Barnsley in a replay, and also missed only 3 games as Albion won the League Championship in 1920. Pearson was selected once for the English national squad at the age of 37, but couldn’t appear due to injury. He also played twice for The Football League, playing against The Irish League at The Hawthorns in October 1914 and against the same opponents at Burnden Park in October 1922.

He was the uncle of Birmingham City and England keeper Harry Hibbs. His other son Horace played in goal for Blackpool, Oldham, Newport and Coventry.
