Wigan, Lancashire born wing half (who played both sides) John “Joe” Peacock signed for Atherton in 1918 before joining First Division Everton the following year, making his Football League debut at Sheffield Wednesday in January 1920. He enjoyed eight seasons at Everton scoring 12 goals in 161 appearances, before a move to Middlesbrough in the summer of 1927. While his first season at Ayresome Park saw their relegation, he played 40 times as they won the 1928-29 Second Division Championship, and after 4 goals in 85 games he moved to League champions Sheffield Wednesday in 1930.
This was after Peacock being awarded 3 England caps in May 1929 when he was selected against France, Belgium and Spain in England’s end of season tour. However he couldn’t get into the Wednesday first eleven and played only once against Chelsea in September 1930, before joining Clapton Orient in 1931. He made 55 appearances over two seasons at Orient before moving to play in Sweden for Sliepner in 1933, his final club before his retirement.
