Glasgow born winger John Finlayson played for Middlesbrough in 1890 before they joined the Football League, and then joined Second Division Bootle in 1892, making his Football League debut at Ardwick (Manchester City) that September, scoring twice in a 10-0 FA Cup win over Gorton Villa that October. All of his appearances for Bootle came before the new year, totalling 11, and he joined Southern League Luton Town in 1894. Other details of his career are uncertain.
