Description

Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire born winger Joe Norton played in local Leicestershire football before joining Atherstone Town in 1910, from where he joined Second Division Stockport County that June, making his Football League debut at Barnsley in October 1911. His stay at Edgeley Park was brief, two goals in 9 appearances, before returning to Atherstone Town in 1912, joining Nuneaton Town in 1913. In December of that year he was signed by First Division Manchester United, making his debut at Oldham Athletic the following January, and he scored 3 times in 37 appearances before peacetime football was suspended due to World War One in 1915. He resumed his playing career after the War in August 1919 signing for Leicester Fosse and making a dozen appearances before joining Bristol Rovers in May 1920. He scored on his Pirates debut against Newport County in September 1920, finding the net 3 times in 39 appearances over 2 seasons before joining Swindon Town in July 1922. His one season at The County Ground saw 2 goals in 27 appearances before he joined Kettering Town in 1923, returning again to Atherstone Town in 1924 and subsequently also playing for Hinckley United, Ashby Town and Leicester Municipal Officers.
