Bilston, Staffordshire born left back Joe Nicholls had been on the books at Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1914-15 prior to the suspension of peacetime football due to the onset of the First World War, without making a first team appearance for Wolves, but as the conflict approached its end he joined non league hometown club Bilston United in 1918 and from there signed for Second Division club Clapton Orient the following year, making his Football League debut at Huddersfield Town in August 1919.

He was an ever present that first peacetime season and over six seasons at Clapton Orient he made 120 appearances for The O’s, all in the Second Division. He scored twice for the club, his first a penalty in a defeat at Lincoln City in October 1919, his only goal in normal play coming eleven months later in a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest, but he lost his regular place in March 1923 and made only 3 further appearances over the next two seasons before returning to Bilston United in 1925.
