Loanhead, Midlothian born centre half Bob Preston joined Heart of Midlothian from Loanhead Mayflower in 1918 making his Hearts debut against Hamilton Academical in February 1919 and playing 143 times for The Jambos through to April 1922, scoring 9 goals, before joining Torquay United that summer. In search of a replacement for Jack Hill, Bob Jack brought Preston from Plainmoor to Home Park in the summer of 1923, his Football League debut coming that September at Portsmouth, and so began five years of excellent service to the club, first at centre half and then at right half after the emergence of Jack Pullen and Fred McKenzie.
After 3 goals in 147 appearances in all competitions, Preston returned to Torquay in 1928 for his final spell in League football, playing 15 times in Torquay’s second League campaign before joining non league Llanelly in 1929. He then spent the early 1930’s in the Irish League playing for Bray, Shelbourne and Sligo Rovers before retirement.
