Brompton, Yorkshire born wing half Bert Neesam began playing football in 1909 for hometown club Brompton, joining Grangetown Athletic in 1912 and Second Division Bristol City in 1913, for whom he made his Football League debut at Glossop in March 1914. Having established himself in the first team that December, the advent of World War One interrupted his career but he resumed with the Ashton Gate club in 1919, and was part of their team that won the Third Division (South) Championship in both 1923 and 1927. By the time he joined non league Bath City in the summer of 1928 already aged 36 he had scored 19 goals in 297 games over 15 years at City, he also went on to play for George’s Brewery in 1929 before hanging up his boots.
