Ecclesall, Sheffield born centre half Charles Smith began his football career on the books of Barnsley in 1924-25, but didn’t make a first team appearance. He joined Doncaster Rovers in 1925, making his Football League debut, and only Football League appearance, in a 3-0 win at Halifax Town in March 1926. Released, he joined Midland League Scunthorpe & Lindsey United, helping them to become Midland League Champions in 1926-27, and alerting Notts County to his potential, who promptly signed him in the 1927 close season. However he spent two seasons in the reserves at Meadow Lane without making the first eleven, joining Grantham in 1929.
NB although by the time the photograph was published in 1927 he was a Notts County player, he is pictured in Scunthorpe strip.
