Description

Tayport, Fife born centre or wing half David Melville began his football career with Buckhaven Juniors in 1902 before joining East Fife in 1903. In April the same year he joined Partick Thistle for £30 and the promise of a match to be played the following season, and he made his Thistle debut the same month against Hibernian. At the end of the 1905-06 season such were his performances for Thistle that he was chosen to represent Glasgow against Sheffield, in a fixture played at Meadowside Park, Patrick’s former home until 1908.

In 1907 he moved south to join Second Division Bradford City, making his Football League debut against Fulham on Boxing Day that year, but playing only twice in his debut season as The Bantams won the Second Division Championship, and 5 times the next season in the top flight, before he moved to Stockport County in the 1909 close season. He stayed 3 seasons at Edgeley Park, scoring 4 times in 77 appearances for The Hatters, before joining Southport Central in 1912, where he ended his career.

NB the photograph was taken before a game with Celtic on 4th November 1905.
