Bill Quay, Gateshead, County Durham born left half back David Mellan began his football career with Wood Skinners after the First World War from where he joined Third Division (South) club Norwich City in 1920 on amateur forms, making his Football League debut, and only appearance for The Canaries, at Swindon Town in February 1921. He returned to north east football, playing for Felling Colliery later in 1921 from where he signed professional for Aston Villa in 1922, spending 1922-23 at Villa Park without making a first team appearance. He moved to Third Division (North) club Chesterfield in the summer of 1923, and played just once for The Spireites in a home win over Barrow that October, but his career after leaving Chesterfield is uncertain.
