Tollcross, Glasgow born left back John McColgan began his football career with Vale of Clyde in 1919 and joined Scottish League Albion Rovers in 1920. Joining Portsmouth early in 1924, he made his Football League debut against Charlton Athletic in February 1924, playing 17 times as Portsmouth were promoted as Third Division (South) Champions at the season end. For the next 4 seasons he was Pompey’s first choice left back, winning a further promotion with the club in 1926-27 as Second Division runners up. The following season, Pompey’s first in the top flight, he was an ever present but he fell out of favour in 1928-29 and despite playing 5 cup ties in the run that led Portsmouth to the 1929 FA Cup Final, including playing in the semi final win over Aston Villa at Highbury, he wasn’t selected for the Final which Portsmouth lost 2-0 to Bolton Wanderers. He made only played 7 more matches for Pompey, and having scored once in 206 appearances, was transferred to Irish League Waterford in 1930, where he played out the remainder of his career.
