Description

Hutchesontown, Glasgow born outside right Dan McRorie began his football career with Queens Park Strollers from where he joined Queen of the South in 1924. He was signed by Scottish top flight club Aurdrieonians in 1926 where he scored 5 goals in 8 matches, and after a season at Broomhill he moved to Stenhousemuir in 1927 where he scored 4 times in 26 matches. He returned to the top flight first with Alloa Athletic scoring 5 goals in 9 matches in 1928 before transferring to Greenock Morton later the same year, where over the next three seasons he enjoyed a prolific scoring spell. In the 1928-29 Scottish Second Division  season he scored 27 goals in 36 matches as the club gained promotion, followed by 18 goals from 13 matches in the top tier at the start of 1930-31 which drew attention from English clubs. It also got him international recognition when he was selected for Scotland at Ibrox Park in October 1930, his only cap for his country, and also for The Scottish League in a 5-0 demolition of The Irish League at Firhill the same month.

McRorie arrived at Liverpool in controversial circumstances as following an investigation by the Scottish Football League Commission it was confirmed that Morton had made an illegal payment to McRorie when he was transferred to Liverpool for £1500 in November 1930. The Morton club was fined £150 and the Chairman of the club, Mr. Urquhart, was suspended indefinitely from taking any part in football. The manager, Mr. Torrance, was fined £25 and the other directors were severely censured.

McRorie made his Football League debut against Sheffield United in November 1930 but played just twice more during the 1930-31 season before coming into The Reds’ first team regularly from November 1931. He notched the first of his six Liverpool goals in an amazing game at Roker Park, Sunderland on 6th December 1930. His strike just before the interval gave Liverpool hope at 3-4 but in a match with many twists and turns the home side eventually ran out winners by six goals to five.

His third and final season at Anfield saw him selected for first-team action on just five more occasions in the autumn of 1932 and after his release the following May he had an unsuccessful trial with Millwall before joining Third Division (North) club Rochdale in October 1933, but he played only 5 matches for Dale over the following month before a return to Morton before the year end, where he scored in his only match. In 1934 he moved back to Merseyside with Cheshire League club Runcorn, and he retired in 1936.
