Glasgow born left back Robert McNeill began his football career with Port Victoria and played for Port Glasgow Athletic in 1890, joining Vale of Leven in 1891 and moving on to Clyde in 1892. He was then signed by First Division club, and “Team of All Talents” Sunderland in the 1894 close season, making his Football League debut against Burnley that September, winning the League Championship in his first season on Wearside. He was also part of their teams that finished runners up in 1898 and in third place in 1900, but he lost his place early the next season and returned to Scotland to join Greenock Morton, where he subsequently finished his career, in the 1901 close season after 159 appearances for Sunderland.
