Description

Duns, Berwickshire born wing half Jock Wightman began his football career with Duns Athletic in 1931, and after a trial at Scarborough in 1932 he joined Third Division (North) York City in August 1933, making his Football League debut against Doncaster Rovers the same September, making 6 appearances for The Minstermen before joining Second Division Bradford Park Avenue in September 1934. He had only played 18 times for Avenue when First Division Huddersfield Town signed him at the end of January 1935, Wightman immediately making his debut for The Terriers in a 1-1 draw against Everton at Leeds Road on 2nd February 1935.

He was a regular in the Huddersfield Town first team until he was again sold mid season, this time to Second Division Blackburn Rovers in January 1937 after 67 appearances. He missed the whole of 1938-39 (through injury?) but returned to Rovers after the Second World War, making 27 of his 71 appearances for Blackburn after the conflict (by when they had returned to the top flight), scoring once for the club either side of the War. He finally joined Carlisle United in August 1947 and had a single season at Brunton Park before his retirement, making 37 appearances for The Cumbrians.
