Description

Dysart, Fife born right half Billy McKinlay began his football career with Inverkeithing Juniors and played for Lochgelly United in 1924 from where he joined Bathgate in 1925, scoring 10 goals in 61 matches for The Maroons, before signing fir Second Division club Nottingham Forest in October 1927, making his Football League debut at Wolverhampton Wanderers that December. He soon became a mainstay of the first team, missing only one match in Forest’s 1929-30 campaign and being ever present in their 1932-33 and 1933-34 campaigns.

In ten seasons at The City Ground he scored 13 goals in 356 matches before a transfer to Alloa Athletic in 1937, where he scored 3 goals in 27 matches in their 1937-38 season. He then joined Albion Rovers scoring once in 16 matches before the Second World War’s outbreak in September 1939 and played wartime football for them, retiring in 1941.

His nephew Bob McKinlay also played for Nottingham Forest, and holds the club’s all-time appearance record.
