Description

Ayr born wing half Jimmy McInnes started his football career with Glasgow University in 1930 and played for junior club Ardeer Recreation in 1931 before joining Scottish League Third Lanark, making his debut in 1935. He signed for First Division Liverpool for £5,500 in March 1938 and made his Football League debut at Brentford four days later, scoring twice in 51 appearances for The Reds before peacetime football was abandoned in September 1939 due to the onset of the Second World War.

During the War he played as a wartime guest for Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United, York City, Leeds United, Luton Town, Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Distillery, and Manchester United. He retired from playing in 1946 joining Liverpool’s administrative staff. He was the Club Secretary from 1955 until he tragically took his own life on 5th May 1965, the day after the famous 3-1 win over Inter Milan at Anfield in the semi-finals of the European Cup. Four days earlier Liverpool had won the FA Cup for the first time against Leeds at Wembley. He had apparently become overwhelmed at the size of the job that he faced, and hanged himself from a beam at the rear of the Spion Kop.
