Description
Wickford, Essex born wing half Jack Mayes joined Barking in 1932 and spent 1933-34 on the books at Crystal Palace without making a first team appearance, returning to Barking in 1934. He joined First Division Chelsea in 1935, making his Football League debut at Liverpool that December, and stayed with the club until the outbreak of the Second World War although during his time at Stamford Bridge he was largely a reserve team player, making 14 appearances for the club including one in the abandoned 1939-40 League season before the outbreak of the Second World War effectively ended his career.
