He made his Football League debut at Stoke the same September, and didn’t miss many games over the next 6 seasons. He played in both the 1899 and 1903 FA Cup Finals however both ended in defeats for Derby, to Sheffield United and Bury respectively.

In May 1904, after 17 goals in 200 appearances for The Rams, he joined Glasgow Rangers, and in 6 years at Ibrox he scored 16 goals in 148 appearances. While at Rangers he appeared 3 times for The Scottish League between March 1906 and February 1908, playing against The Football League on each occasion. He also won 5 caps for Scotland, the first coming against Wales at Tynecastle in March 1906, his final cap 3 years later against Wales at Wrexham. His only cap against England was in front of 121,000 spectators at Hampden Park in April 1908. He joined Morton in 1910 where he finished his career.
