Description

Frodingham, Lincolnshire born inside right Arthur Maw played for local junior club Frodingham Athletic in 1926 before joining Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in 1927, from where he was signed by Second Division Notts County in 1928 making his Football League debut at Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1929. He scored 5 goals in 13 appearances as The Magpies won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1931, although in four seasons at Notts County he failed to make a regular starting berth his own, scoring 11 goals in only 36 appearances.

But he was signed by First Division Leicester City in the summer of 1932, immediately paying back their confidence in him as he scored 14 goals in 18 appearances in his debut season including hat-tricks against Aston Villa, scoring all 3 goals in a 3-0 win in February 1933, and West Bromwich Albion in a 6-2 win that May to finish as the club’s top goalscorer. However his goals couldn’t stop Leicester from being relegated in 1935, and although he was the club’s top scorer with 18 goals in 1935-36 as they finished sixth in the Second Division, he lost his regular place scoring 3 times in 9 appearances as Leicester won the Second Division Championship in 1937 to regain their First Division status.

Maw played two further seasons with Leicester in the First Division before re-joining Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in 1939 after 64 goals in 189 appearances for The Foxes, before the outbreak of the Second World War finished his career.
