Description

Motherwell, Lanarkshire born centre forward David (mainly known as Davie) Mathie began his football career with Larkhall Thistle and Wishaw Juniors first joining Motherwell in 1938, where he quickly impressed, scoring 20 goals in 30 matches before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 severely interrupted his career. During the war between his Army service he had two spells at both Derry City and Linfield, as well as guesting for Dumbarton and Hibernian, but after the War he joined Clyde in 1946, scoring twice in 5 matches before joining Partick Thistle in November 1946, where he scored 40 goals in 53 matches before re-joining Motherwell for £2,725 in February 1948.

He scored a further 16 goals in 42 matches for The Steelmen before joining Welsh League club Llanelli in 1950, but returned to Scottish League action with Kilmarnock in 1951 where he netted 25 times in 40 matches through to January 1953. Later that year he joined Third Division (North) club Workington, making his Football League debut at Stockport County in October 1953, playing again a week later against Rochdale, however he died in hospital in Motherwell in early January 1954 aged just 34.
