Doncaster born winger Leonard Massarella played for Denaby before he was signed by Second Division Sheffield Wednesday in 1937, for whom he made his Football League debut at Swansea Town in January 1938. He remained in the first team for most of the rest of the season, but lost his place at the beginning of the new season, and had to wait until October for a run of first team matches that ended in January 1939. By the time the Second World War intervened effectively ending his football career, he had scored 10 goals in 34 appearances for The Owls.
