Arbroath, Angus born left half Alfred James “Alec” Leslie began his football career with Greenock Wayfarers in 1913 and played for Port Glasgow Juniors in 1914 before the outbreak of the First World War disrupted his career. After the War he joined Scottish League St Mirren in August 1919, spending time at Houghton Rovers on loan in 1920, and scored once in 45 appearances for The Buddies before joining Morton in July 1923. He then joined non league Torquay United in 1924, and it was there that his performances brought him to the attention of bigger clubs, and he was signed by First Division Birmingham City in March 1927.

He made his Football League debut at Leeds the following month, and in his first full season he was an ever present, and missed only 4 games the following season, 1928-29, however a niggling knee injury disrupted his career. He was however a member of Birmingham’s 1931 FA Cup run, playing 7 cup ties and appearing in the Final in April 1931, where they were beaten 2-1 by West Bromwich Albion at Wembley Stadium. He played his last game for Birmingham in September 1931 before finally retiring in 1932 after 143 appearances for The Blues.
