Barrhead, Renfrewshire born wing half James Logan began with junior club Barrhead Fereneze in 1902 before joining Scottish League amateur club Queen’s Park in 1903, making his Scottish League debut at Dundee that August. He scored 8 times in 57 appearances for The Spiders, before joining First Division Aston Villa in July 1905.

He made his Football League debut against Stoke that December but struggled to establish himself in his first season, but from 1906 he became a regular first teamer and became club captain in 1907, being described as “a sure kick and a player of great resource”. In seven seasons at Villa Park he scored 4 goals in 158 appearances before joining Glasgow Rangers in September 1912.

At Ibrox he scored 8 goals in 131 appearances over the next five seasons, and he played for The Scottish League against The Football League in a 4-1 victory at Hampden Park in March 1913. He also played for Scotland in an unofficial wartime international in 1916. He joined Partick Thistle in 1916 and played for St Mirren, scoring once in 17 games between October 1917 and May 1918, before finishing his professional career with Arthurlie.

His older brother Alec played with him at Aston Villa and also played for among other clubs Arthurlie, Bristol City and Falkirk. His younger brother Tom played for Falkirk and Chelsea.
