Description

Bo’ness, West Lothian born left winger Danny Liddle joined hometown club Bo’ness in 1927 and played for Wallyford Bluebell in 1928 before joining East Fife in 1929. Liddle was central to East Fife’s only season in Scottish football’s top division before the Second World War when they spent 1930-31 in the First Division after finishing Second Division runners-up the year before. Such was his good form that he was selected for Scotland’s European tour of May 1931, winning 3 Scotland caps in games against Austria, Italy and Switzerland.

In May 1932 he joined First Division Leicester City, making his Football League debut against Sheffield United in August the same year. He scored 8 goals in the 1932-33 and was an ever present the following season as Leicester went to the FA Cup semi final in 1934, losing to Portsmouth at St Andrews. He scored 14 goals a season for each of 1933-34 and 1934-35, being the club’s top scorer both seasons, however Leicester were relegated in the latter season. After two seasons they returned to the First Division in 1936-37 as Second Division Champions, and he continued to be an integral part of the team until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, although The Foxes had again suffered relegation in 1938-39.

During the War he made guest appearances for Notts County, Northampton Town and Mansfield Town in addition to playing for Leicester. After the Second World War he returned to Filbert Street and played one more game for Leicester in the 1946 FA Cup, but  after 71 goals in 277 appearances he joined Mansfield Town in July 1946, although he played only once for The Stags in September 1946. He joined non league Stamford Town in 1947, playing for Hinckley Athletic in 1948 and South Wigston Working Men’s Club in 1949, before retirement.
