Description

Diminutive West Lothian born inside left Jackie Law signed for Airdrieonians in 1932 from Tranent Juniors and played at Broomfield Park for five seasons. It was said of him “a midget in size… (he) is one of the smallest forwards playing in Scottish First League football. He is little more than five feet” [he was in fact little more than 5 foot 1!] “but is of the worrying, roaming and tenacious type that gives great trouble to a defence. Law has a ready shot and an amazing feature of his play is the height he can reach in the jump. He will challenge the tallest player in a leap for the ball.”… “Jackie never hesitates to have a go when near goal, and is a difficult man to dispossess, as heftier opponents have found to their cost”.

He signed for Queen of the South in 1936, where he became club captain, and was one of the team who inflicted a famous 1-0 Scottish Cup victory over Rangers in 1937, and he went on to become something of a Queen of the South legend, playing 228 times for the first team in all competitions scoring 71 goals, despite the interruption of the Second World War, and continuing to play for Queens until 1948-49, making 137 Scottish League appearances despite losing six seasons to the War. Popular with the fans, he was given a testimonial against Preston North End at Palmerston Park in 1946.

He also fathered two professional footballers, Jackie Law Jr and Lex Law, both of whom were notable players for Queen of the South.  Lex Law is 16th place in the Queens all time goal-scoring charts (as at 30th August 2011), two places below his father.
