Sheffield born goalkeeper Cyril Hibberd had signed for Midland League Chesterfield in 1913 as an amateur before World War One intervened, and after the resumption of peacetime football he joined Mansfield Town in 1920 before returning to Chesterfield in August 1921, by then newly elected to The Football League, making his Football League debut at Durham City that November and playing 60 times for Chesterfield over the course of the next 2 seasons. He moved to rochdale in September 1923 but made only two appearances for Dale, both against Tranmere Rovers in April 1924.
