Jarrow born left back Martin Joyce played junior football for Jarrow St Bede’s in 1920 before joining Darlington in June 1921, making his debut against Chesterfield in September 1921 and playing 11 times during Darlington’s inaugural League season. He became the club’s first choice left back from January 1923 and was a member of their team that won the 1924-25 Third Division (North) Championship. The following season Joyce was an ever present in their first season in the Second Division, however after they were relegated in 1927 he fell out of favour and joined Durham City in February 1928 after 175 appearances. However, after Joyce had made 15 appearances, when Durham City failed to get re-elected at the end of the 1927-28 season, he retired from professional football.
