Description

Stepney, London born left back George Johnson began his senior football career with Southern League club Southend United and was on their books for at least the 1907-08 season if not earlier, from where he signed for Second Division club Clapton Orient, making his Football League debut at Blackpool in January 1909. He established himself in the first team from the following October, and missed only four matches as Clapton Orient finished fourth in the division in 1910-11, scoring 4 goals, all penalties, his only goals of his career, including both goals in a 2-1 victory over Birmingham in March 1911.

Exactly a year later in March 1912 he was transferred to Chelsea and played twice during their run in to promotion as Second Division runners up, and then a further three matches for Chelseas in the top flight in 1912-13 including two defeats to Sheffield Wednesday, his last match for The Pensioners a heavy FA Cup defeat at Hillsborough. Johnson was not retained and joined Southern League club Portsmouth in the summer of 1913, spending a year at Fratton Park before a move to Hampshire League club Boscombe in 1914, the First World War’s outbreak then effectively ending his career.
