Description

Glasgow born goalkeeper Johnny Jackson began his football career with Kirkintilloch Rob Roy and signed for Scottish League Partick Thistle in 1926, and such was his impact that he was soon gaining representative honours. He played for The Scottish League 4 times between October 1929 and November 1932, notably they won every game, and won 8 caps for Scotland, 4 while still at Partick Thistle with his international debut coming in May 1931 against Austria in Vienna, going on to make 264 appearances for Partick in seven years at Fir Park.

However his Scotland career ended in 1935 in similar sequence with the decline in his fortunes at Chelsea, whom he’d joined “for a big fee” in June 1933, making his Football League debut at Stoke City that August. In competition with Vic Woodley, he played 27 times in 1934-35, but only 10 times in 1935-36, thereafter making only 6 appearances until the outbreak of the Second World War as Woodley became an automatic first choice for both Chelsea and England. He stayed at Chelsea until 1942 and later both played for Guildford City and also became a professional golfer, playing in total 51 games for Chelsea.
