Nottingham born winger John “Jimmy” Frettingham started his career with junior clubs Beeston St John’s in 1890, playing for Stapleford, Basford and Newark Town in 1891 before having trials with Nottingham Forest and Leicester Fosse in 1892, without success. He joined Long Eaton Rangers in 1893 before joining Second Division Lincoln City in 1894, for whom he made his Football League debut against Woolwich Arsenal that September, scoring twice in a 5-2 victory. He scored 10 League goals a season for Lincoln over each of the next two seasons, but joined Southern League New Brompton (now Gillingham) in the 1896 close season after 22 goals in 60 appearances for The Imps.
