Glasgow born centre forward Tom Hutchinson started his football career with Govan in 1889, joining Stockton in 1890 and playing for Govan Whitfield in 1891 before returning to County Durham to join Darlington, where he turned professional in August 1891. He had a spell on Newcastle United’s books, joining them in October 1893 without making their first eleven, before a move to Nelson in January 1894, from where he joined First Division West Bromwich Albion for £50 in July 1894, making his Football League debut at Sheffield United in September 1894.

He played in the 1895 FA Cup Final, which Albion lost 1-0 to local rivals Aston Villa at The Crystal Palace, and also scored the winning goal that year against Aston Villa in the Birmingham Senior Cup Final. In July 1896 he moved north to join Glasgow Celtic having been released by West Brom after 21 goals in 57 appearances for The Baggies, playing 2 matches for The Bhoys, both against Hearts, before joining Abercorn in November the same year. He then joined Lancashire League club Stockport County, but retired in May 1897 due to injury. He recovered sufficiently to make a comeback with Ellesmere Port in 1899, finally retiring for good in 1904.
